Congratulations To All Of The Art Students Who Participated!
Sycamore Arts recently held their first annual student art contest. Each school was invited to participate. The student reception was held Friday, April 1 at NWCC Atrium. Local Art teachers working with the students were Mrs. Jean Bennett, SHS, Mrs. Carol Givens, SMS, Mrs. Tanya Warner, East Tate Elementary, and Mrs. Betty Shingler, Strayhorn School. Some participating were left Austin Baker, SMS: Michael Williams, East Tate and Reagan Belk, East Tate Elementary.
Blues in School Cigar Box Guitars
Students from art classes of Mackey Harrison at Independence High School ... with their Cigar Box Guitars. Guitars are 3-string and electrified and were constructed by the students last year.
Program has been re-funded by SA for 2008-09 due to student demand. Mr. Harrison included study/history of the Blues in his instruction.
Ken Waldman, Alaska's Fiddling Poet, a former college professor and Philadelphia native, moved to Alaska twenty years ago and has been a traveling minstrel for more than ten years. Mr. Waldman presented educational programs at Strayhorn School, Magnolia Heights, Senatobia Convalescent Center and Senatobia Library.
Summer Art Camp
Sycamore Arts held their annual Summer Art Camp on June 5 - 8 at SMS. This year the theme was Celebrating Your Creative Self taught by Mackey Harrison of Independence High School. The students used different textured papers and foil along with paint to design their paintings. Each was encouraged by Mr. Harrison to use their imagination and creativity. Students working on their projects were: left clockwise Shalabrin Forest, Mackey Harrison, instructor, Elizabeth Kogler, Tyler Hardin, Anna Pelkey, and Katie Brown.
